Description
This is a photo of the John Hancock Tower on Michigan Ave. (aka the famous Miracle Mile) in downtown Chicago. Our hotel was its neighbour during out visit.
Although this tower - commonly known as "The Hancock" or "Big John" is not the tallest building in Chicago, its design and appearance is world famous for the Architect's use and proud display of primary triangular cross-bracings. These 6 rows of cross-braced triangles that give the build its unique appearance not only provided immense stength to the building but dramatically reduced the amount of steel required during construction.
I wanted to take a photo of this famous building's architecture that played heavily into its unique design. So to emphasize these criss-crossing ribs, I framed and aligned the lowest facing crossbrace as being flush to the bottom of photo. As you can see, from the angle of the photo I took of the building, the left edge of the building ended up flush to the left edge of the photo frame. That was planned too.
I was lucky in that there was no clouds in the sky that morning. Also, since the morning sun was behind the tower from my angle, the sun lit up the tower' nearby front neighbouring building which added a beautiful reflective accent to the bottom panes of glass - further emphasizing the height of Big John to his neighbours.
Not that I had much of a choice from this photo frame size and angle that you can see one of the Hancock's other neighbouring towers. I was happy it stayed in the frame because that building itself has some significance for many of you... the top floor (and I understand its 2 floors) of this major mixed-use building (the WaterTower Center) is one of the active homes of ... yes.... Opra Winfrey.
This is a pure PHOTO of the Hancock. I also wanted to do a Photo Manipulation of this same photo, so look for my "BIG JOHN" photo art. I would love to hear your opinion if you like this pure photo or the photo manipulation better.
